what are some affordable OBD devices?
I installed a new battery myself, no data lost, no errors, but the battery has to be registered otherwise the alternator will not charge it properly (there's much debate about that, but I'd rather register it).
Called couple indy shops, one wants $60 to register the battery, another wants $90 ...quote "to reprogram the car". This is a 5-10 minute job at most. I know Bavarian Technic sells the OBD software and cables for $287. I tried searching for cheaper stuff out there, but I'm coming across $60 scanners that you can rent for free at O'Rilleys, I've used them before, they just read fault codes and sometimes reset them, I don't think I can use it to register the new battery.
Anyone know of any other OBD devices out there cheaper than Bavarian Tech? Might as well buy one for future uses...it will ultimately pay for itself.

If interested - I sell my cable for $50 + shipping, software disk included.
If it's the One Stop Electronics cable, I'll take it! I picked up a cheap one off eBay and it won't work on my 2010 535i. I'm local to Atlanta and could even meet up with you to pick it up!

I got started at bmwcoding.com. Beginners lounge, it will have links and show you how to get started, including how to update, newer daten files...etc.
I sell mine because I sold my bimmer, got tired of all issues with my car.
Thanks,
Craig
