This is a new engine (545), then what is this?

By the new engine, I believe he means the newly desinged R6 engine (3.0 l available in the MY 06 530i's and 330i's). It is my understanding that the new 5.0 l V8 will also only have the electonic dipstick.

Roll your eyes all you want, but I'd rather not have to open and close the hood, worry about whether or not the oil is settled, if the car is flat, etc...

Also, checking the oil involves getting oil on my hands, endangering clothing (none of which is cheap), and having to discard dirty, oily paper towels which is bad for the environment not to mention a fire hazard.

According to my manual only the petrol engines have the electronic oil check, Just received my 530d and it does not have it.

derrickj - care to compare/contrast the R6 to your 545i?

Sorry for the delay in response, I have been out of town. I would love to be able to compare them but they are so dramatically different, its difficult to compare. V8-V6, sport-non-sport, NAV-Non Nav (which affects I-drive response). The loaner car is the base model (plus steptronic) so I don't even think it has Dynamic Drive. Other than that, I like them the same.

And oh, the R6 DOES have the wooden trim around the rear 12V outlets which I love.
