During my purchase of a 545i, I found it really hard to get anywhere close to the magic $1,000 above invoice. If you can get anywhere between $1,000 to $2,000 off MSRP on a 2005 545i you are doing good. If you are not willing to wait for a car ordered, you would be unlikely to even get a 545i for MSRP, at least in California. Good luck.

This dealer was very upfront and honest no beating around the bush
Sure you're talking about a car salesman. He must be in the wrong job.

Sometimes it pays to target the youngest/newest salesman. Most salesmen have the same authorisation for discounts. An experienced one will not give their best price right away, as they want to earn good commission. Going for the greenhorn can sometimes work in your favour. Go in with a very keen offer, and squeeze until you get the best possible price.

You need to know what the lowest "street" price is. First of all go to a dealer that you don't want to buy from. Practice doing the deal there. Go to another dealer and practice some more. Then go to the dealer you want to buy from, and hopefully you'll know the number you should be able to get, and be successful at the dealer you want to buy from.

Internet car sales are great. Research what you'd pay online, and then go to a dealer. Tell them "match the deal or I'll buy online".

I'm not in the US, so perhaps my experience isn't valid there. Certainly in the UK salesmen are less used to a haggle. Asking for discount still surprises some of them, and they're unprepared for it. I'm sure the US guys are much more savy to that. (UK is also known as "Treasure Island" because too many just pay the sticker price). BTW, the best price I could get was ?2500 discount, and that's still vastly more than the US retail price.

Dr2be, you don't mention where you are located. I think location has an influence on the price you'll end up with. I adotped the Rizzo Method when it was time for me to negotiate on my '05 545 in the San Diego area. In early Sep dealers only wanted to sell me the '04s on their lot and not order an '05. Using modifications to the Rizzo Method I negotiated $3300 over invoice (about $2200 under MSRP) during a time when many dealers told me their best deal was $1000 under MSRP. I also must say that the "separation" between buyer (you) and the dealer that results using this technique removes the stress that often accompanies the negotiation process. But...be a very knowledgeable buyer - it helps during negotiation. Also, NEVER talk MSRP with the sales person. Only talk invoice price plus a profit over invoice. It was amazingly easy when you know exactly what you want.

Good luck....
