What is the purpose of the light on the mirror?

On the M5, there is a light on the mirror that to me have no real purpose, can you explain me in your view, what kind of purpose does it serves? also, is there a light like that one regulars E60?

Yes it on regular E60's as well, may depend on what options you have though.
My car came with blue LED's under the mirror as standard.
They are for pathway lighting. They turn on automatically when you lock/unlock the car so you know your way around in a dark area.
Looks really cool at night!

That light is part of the lights package in HK which is standard.

My issue with this is that at the same time the mirror lights turn on so do my interior lights. How can I make it so the mirrors go on but the interior stays off?
