Hi all -
New to these forums but not BMW's.. I've been reading here the past few days and want some direction..
Between all the high asking prices and high mile cars, there are some that look to be better taken care of. I haven't seen a lot on the forums about a general mileage level to be wary of. Obviously each car is unique and mileage needs to be considered with how the miles were accrued - but what would be a good range to look at for someone buying an e60 today?
Thanks

Just my take, I would either buy a low miles (around 35K) private sale with about one year in remaining factory warranty or I would buy CPO, in which case mileage could be up to about 60K. Let condition and options be the final decider.

I have purchased 3 used E60s. My advise is to make sure you have a few months worth of time and miles under new car warranty at a minimum to catch things the dealer would repair as a warranty item and the previous owner never complained about them. This is true even for a CPO car. Just because they inspected it, etc I have always had something that was never addressed and the dealers don't fix them unless the owner complains.
Couple quick examples:
1) The leaking sunroof seal. Fixed under warranty. After 50k miles it will cost you about $200
2) Squeaking front sway bar bushings when you go over speed bumps. Fixed under warranty. After 50k miles it cost you about $200.

I prefer low mileage CPO examples for me. I got my 2005 in 2007 off a lease return with 16k miles on it. Full CPO warranty just ran out after 6 years and I still haven't hit 74k miles

Depends on the situation and the vehicle's history. My car has 120K miles and I would pin it against other vehicles with 60K miles and feel better with my vehicle because I've known it's life story from the production line.

Only buy two year (model year) old cars with minimum 2 years left on original warranty plus 2 years CPO on top. Must have less than 20,000km (12,000mi) and must be immaculate. Will usually keep for four years.
Bought 08 535i in July 09 with 16,000km(10,000mi) and currently has 31,000km (19,000mi).

I bought CPO with just under 42,000 miles and almost 9 months left on the New Car Warranty. I was comfortable with that. Nice to have two more years of CPO warranty.

I typically look for 90k miles or less. Regardless, maintenance history and obvious car of the vehicle as a whole are the most important things regardless of mileage.
