Did they discontinue the SMG? I was thinking of keeping my car after my lease was up for a couple of years, but now what kind of re-sale value will my car have with a transmission that is discontinued. I love my SMG and this sport auto box will in no way compare..How very disappointing...Thanks BMW

I'm as bummed as you are but maybe, just maybe, the resale value will go up since it's rare and possibly in demand for people like us who really love the SMG?

Maybe Formula One and Indy Cars have paddle-shifting wrong! (But I guess it depends what the paddles are shifting, eh?)...

Do you find paddle-shifting second rate? Or is it the fact that it's auto?

First its the fact that its an auto, and I rarely use the paddle shifters, coming from most manual cars, i like shifting with the gear shifter.
Or is the SMG "better" than you are?

My Ride: 2007 550i..... ex
The SMGs in the regular 5series is crap to begin with really, I'd rather take the full 6spd manual over that. I chose the step due to it's better gas mileage, no gas guzzler charge and simply because it's one hell of a tranny.

I test drove the e60 in a manual and I didnt like the clutch feel, just too soft. After driving a manual for many years, I just got tired of it in traffic. As for the macho crap statement, I bet the SMG is better than YOU. Have you ever even driven the SMG?!

I guess Znod would be able to say what the advantages of SMG are over manual.

I was hinted that I don't know much about spirited driving (although at times I race 997 911 Carrera S manual for fun).
Now, BMW decided no more SMG.....I think that should close the chapter about SMG being better, all driving conditions considered.
