Mine behave differently too. After my key died (another thread) and I started using the second master key, my door locks no longer default to locked. The car used to lock down as soon as I got rolling. It no longer does so.
The information being passed is pretty ingenious IMO. Rather than hook the car up to diagnostics, the SA can just plug the key into a reader (he has it anyway when he fills out your paperwork) and voila - he knows how it's doing.
You need to put in the key and then set all the preferences and hit the memory button. Then you need to do the same thing again with the other key. This worked on my 2006 530i and my 2006 330i

Yeah, but I don't know of a place in the car to set the locking behavior. Same goes for stuff like the DRLs. I think both of those get set by the dealer or service dept. I agree - things like seat position, etc... that's all memory buttons.

You can set locking behavior in the settings menu -- since day one...

Sorry, didn't recall that. Been a while since I stomped around in there.

Rudy is right, as allways.

In the i-menu you can set the door locking behavior.

I didn't know my key fob was such a snoop, I'll have to stop cursing in rush hour traffic

Yup, as we say in the states... "set and forget".
