Hi All, how do you tell if the RPM on idle is set to the optimum for your E60? What is yours? Mine seems to be at 0.6 mark. Is this considered low?

That's normal.
Mine idles at 600 rpm also, when cold at about 800.

While something of a simplification, warmed-up idles for a 545i are 500 RPM with climate control off and 700 RPM with climate control on.

According to the SM at Hassel Motors, Freeport, NY, there is no real "normal" rpm at idle. It is controlled by the engine's computer. Of course, wild fluctuations may indicate something wrong going on, however a mininal amount of variation from day to day should not be a cause for alarm.
Does the idle rpm have anything to do with how quiet the engine is or how smooth at idle? Thinking that bmw engines are very smooth and quiet at idle more or less because of the lower idle rpm.

"Normal" idle, I would tend to believe, should be both smooth and quiet .
