Hey guys,

About time for an oil change, I go with Mobil 1 and have been using 5w 30 I think, but I have seen members using 0w 30 or something like that. With my mileage (74k) what do you guys think? Thanks. Oh and how many quarts is it again? (2004 525i)

I was at autozone yesterday (doing my 1st oil change after maint. plan expired) and they recommended 10w 30. I have just over 50k miles though. Can anyone else chime in on this? I want to make sure that I get it right the 1st time. Thanks!

0W 30 BMW proved Long Life oil only. Fully synthetic Mobil 1 is perfect.

About 6 liters for a L6.

Also chang the oil filter and the engine air filter and the fresh air filters and reset the iDrive!

It's wise to let the dealer to do the service! Costs about 300.

If you don't serve the car, expensive problems will occur for sure.

I use Red Line 5w-30 but you can't wrong with Mobil 1 5w-30, 911's and vettes come from the factory with Mobil 1.

I think the car calls for 5w-30, I see no reason to change viscosity because of the miles on the car.

I use Mobile 1 0w-40 as it meets BMW's specs.

Your car comes with 5w-30.

If your oil consumption between changes is normal (even my high mileage BMWs burned no oil between changes) I would stay with the viscosity your owner's manual recommends for the ambient temperatures and driving conditions in your local area. The top brands already noted meet or exceed BMW's specs.

You can download a pdf of the owners manual in the information section of the forum.

I usually have changed my own, and the "special tools" to remove the filters are readily available.

If I keep this e60 beyond the maintenance program, or feel the need to do in-between changes it doesn't seem any different than my 740s or Roadster ... drop the trap door in the lower splash pan & remove drain plug [watch our for stuck drain plug gasket] ... spin off the filter can cover, drain all ... replace filter, and o-rings, bolt / screw things together and refill. Don't reset the Condition Based settings to keep the dealer and prepaid maintenance service happy and off ya go!
