the cosmetic changes provided by the M packages do make a difference IMO...case in point...the upcoming f10 deperately needs an M package (m tech aero kit) to help with it's exterior short-comings....

so it's not as simple as just being "hooked by the M"

nice "member" name by the way....

M sports are far better than SE's, i can say that having just changed from an E60 530d Se to a E60 535d M Sport...

Ride better, steering better and looks better. Sorry..

It is not even close. At wide open throttle above 30-40 mph, the M5 pulls away from my car like it was standing still. In the extreme twisties, my car can run with the M5s. But as soon as the road straightens out and the game is about power, not grip, there is absolutely no contest once at speed -- the M5 is the ultimate BMW performance sedan.

As for the 535, a stock one is a tad slower than a 550 but once tuned and the turbo boost increased, it will pull away from the 550 (although it will never have the 550's wonderful engine sound).

a couple of my partners have e60s. one has a 550 and another has an m5. my car, untuned, is almost exactly as fast as the 550. depending the circumstance, his may be faster, in others, mine may be faster. from a stoplight, my car is faster. the m5 is no contest. it is not even remotely close after 40 or so. highway pulls? not a chance. the m5 SHINES at over 60 or 70.

one 535 is not necessarily the same as another 535. i've seen dynos of stock 535s with 30 hp differences. i think i got a fast one. also, giac tune coming for me in the very near future. that said, the m5 will still suck the paint off my car.

as far as sound, the six sounds good, but 6 just cant sound like 8... pretty much no matter what you do.

There is indeed a world of difference in the handling of a sport package, non Xi E60 versus that of a non-sport package
, non Xi E60. The handling is much sharper and firmer thanks to the sport tuned suspension, bigger whee?s with summer peformance tires and Active Roll Stabilization, I have loaned out non-sport package E60s and have been appalled by the sloppy handling.

Going back to the original question....

The M branch within BMW Cars has four sub divisions
* M cars
* M-sport package (on BMW standard cars)
* BMW Individual
* BMW Driver training

As each division have different products, it depends on market penetration how they are presented.

Smile Clarified the Pecking Order

So the pecking order is stock 535i (M Sport if you will), 550, M5 and Alpina

E60 M sport is basically an appearance package (interior and exterior) along with sport suspension. Definitely worth holding out for, it's what I have with my 535, but you're nowhere near a real M5.
