Remember that an outside temperature of 37 degrees can differ from area to area. If there is a shady road that had frozen overnight, the sun may not have melted the ice and the shaded area of the road can fluctuate up to 10 degrees keeping it frozen. So BMWs 5 degree offset is not that bad of a theory.

I've been getting it, plus a chime, when the temp. hits 37 degrees F.? And I remember seeing this in the manual, though I'm not sure I agree with their theory that an air temperature 5 degrees above freezing implies an ice risk.
More to the point - has anyone tried to correlate the temperature the car shows you with actual?? I have and it's been anywhere from 10 low to 5 high.? So I wouldn't rely on it.
