I agree. Unfortunatly my 525d doesn't and likes to kick down more than i would like. I feel that there is quite a large amount of play in the autobox at lower revs which i think is worse in the 525d ? I am used to driving below 2000rpm and using the torque properly but cannot now .

Still, love the car despite its faults...
Indeed, the 530d is probably better in this respect and why it is often reported that the consumption of the 525d and 530d are similar because you have to work the 530d less, in general...

They are not similar, the 530d is MORE economical

Official extra urban figures are (on the auto's) 43.5 for the 525d and 47.1 fir the 530d! I wish i knew that before getting a 525d!

I definitely us DS for more spirited driving! One item on DS - it will not go into 6th gear. I know it has been debated on this forum - through my own testing (DS to about 70 mph - then slide it back into D and feel the shift - or other way around) it stays in 5th. I use it on the freeway as a subtle downshift shoud I see a Police officer ahead that may not care for me exceeding the speed limit...should that ever happen...

Sorry, but yes it will go into 6th gear. You have to "feather" the gas and coach it in there, but it does happen.

Incidentially, our Steptronic transmissions have two internal settings, Sport and Economical, for each mode D DS and M, i.e. a total of six programs for the tranny. The two internal modes are set according to how agressive, or how fast, you push down on the accelerator.

I think you will find differences in the software for V8 versus I6 equipped e60s and e63s (Europe has I6 in e63s). Also differences in EGS (step tranny control) software between 4.8L and 4.4L engines at least in the e63 varient. Through all CIPs from 16.1 through 22.01 the e63 4.4L engines remain in 5th gear at least to 150MPH in either DS or D "Sport". Tested and retested using various means such as starting in D at 145 MPH and changing to DS or D "Sport" and in each and every case goes to 5th gear. Also simply running up from 0-145 MPH results in shifting into 5th gear only in either of the Sport aggressive modes - feathering teh throttle or not. There are so many variations that an I6 equipped e60 or e63 cannot tell a V8 equipped owner what they will get under any given circumstances. Also realize that the EGS software may get modified in an PROGMAN (CIP) upgrade so to properly communicate comparisons you need, build date, engine type and HP, and software level to even hope to have an apples to apples discussion. Anything less is pure conjecture.

i have a theory when it comes to consumption,
in the city with stop and go trafic small engines(and smaller cars)....are better as they spend less fuel at slow speeds, and in acceleration..
but as speed builds up (highways/motorways) those small engines start to strugle and have to use over 70-75% of there power constantly, and there fuel consumption shoots under those demands..
Big engines(espically on big cars) find the stop and go driving wastes fuel because they spend there power & fuel(worse if your a heavy vehicle), geting you up to 60km/h and then you stop and start again. but when it comes to highways those engines excel they use very little engine power at higher speeds 100+ and remain low on reves and fuel....

actually if you have a small car 1.4 or 1.6 with 4 gears you will REALLY notice that the high speeds kill it...

I'm not convinced the Sport mode is actually any quicker with the diesels. I find the low down torque suits the normal mode better.

Personally I prefer the tap up/down approach if I want 'spirited' driving or use the kickdown for any unexpected requirements...
When on a fast highway drive I often switch to DS and just toggle it between 5 and 6. I love cresting that wave of low down torque on the diesel and it feels much smoother when the car isn't shifting gears all the time.

Unfortuantly Madoon, the 520d and 525d/530d kinda kills that argument. The smaller engine is just at home on the motorway as in the city but is just as good on the motorway AND is more economical at the same time. If you start hitting silly speeds on the unrestricted (ahem ) roads then i suppose the larger enginge would be better off but at those speeds, fuel economy is second priority.

Fock! I have been driving all this time and had now clue about this kewl mode. Of course my Dealer could have given me a little heads up on delivery. Or even read past page one of the manual.

I am so jazzed now about this going to take a liittle spin today.
