What is the output on the screen when you press the i-drive knob in the pre lci e60's?

This is of high interest to me as well. My 06 530i goes in for service on June 1st and they are going to update my iDrive to the latest and greatest. I am curious what the latest version is and what features indicators there are. I have heard about my menu screen changing from brown to grey being the most noticable sign. Any help is awesome, thanks!!

By output, do you mean the i-menu? You don't speecify at what point you are pressing the iDrive knob.

The history of iDrive and differences between first generation, second generation, and third generation are documented in my article.

You posted your question at 2:58am and then posted your second at 4:03am.

I hope you really didn't expect an answer to your question in only 1 hour 5 minutes, did you?

Compared to the U.S. factory version on '06 models, the '07 SW and newer adds several nice features. It depends on your previous updates as to what you might already have. New stuff since '06 includes a time-out on the accept screen, POI search, somewhat faster scrolling, a different arrangement to the center (i) menu, etc.
In '08 LCI models they added shortcut buttons and went away from hepatic controller. You won't get that with just a SW update.
