There is a plate on the front shock tower under the hood that gives your color (in German) and color code. For example: Mine has a black plate that states "Silber Grau A08", thus I know my car is a Silver Grey Metallic code A08

Wow so blind people can drive now? Kudos to you for not letting a disability get in the way of your dreams! =P
Also, everyone please try not to misspell anything as it would screw up his speech software.
(I'm sorry, but i just had to!)

If you click on "5 Series Information Network" at the top of this page, then click on "Information" at the top of that page, you can then click to see a list of all different Exterior Colours offered on the Pre-LCI and LCI E60/E61.
Here is the direct link: https://5series.net/information/options/exterior/
With regards to lots of different versions of the same colour, I thought that the paint code was the only identifier, e.g. A08, and not extra numbers. When I had my M5 parts painted, I simply quoted the Carbon Black code that I found in the link above. Carbon Black has been offered on all sorts of BMW models and I received a perfect paint match.
So I am a little confused about AchtungE60's comment above that there are different versions of "the same colour".
I know there was Silver Grey for the pre-LCI E60 with paint code "A08" and then there was a VERY similar colour with the LCI E60 called Space Grey with paint code "A52". So although they look like similar colours, the paint codes are different. Maybe this is maybe what AchtungE60's referring to Hope fully AchtungE60 can clarify...
