If I had a choice b/w 535i and 535d, I'd choose 535d in a heart-beat. Chiptuning the 535d and it'll be like a rocket. I don't know if 535i can be chip-tuned like 535d?
No one knows this yet.
Funny that you took it up, coming from the US...

But the new x30i will give 275 hp and the new twin-turbo N54B35 "only 306
As in thinking - hard!

Just to remind you guys;

BMW was the Formula 1 World Champion with Brabham in 1983.

The driver was the Brazilian legend Nelson Piquet.

The engine was then a R4 1.5 litre turbo, it gave more than 1000 hp!

no offense but if you tune anything with 1000$ that is impossible in Europe...I doubt but ok let's see. ps. petrol remap is not comperable w diesels, and you wud probably need some more stuff than just a remap will let you know when the engine comes out

Shrug - we'll see. I only said $1000 because everything is so damned overpriced for BMWs - remaps should be $500-$600 tops, but will likely be more than that because it's for a BMW.

I don't quite know why you'd think petrol remaps cannot compare to diesel. I've worked extensively with turbo cars and the sky is the limit. 100hp should be trivial. I'd keep an eye on Dinan, GIAC, and maybe Autothority for remaps stateside. I'd hope Dinan would offer something, making warranty concerns a non-issue.

If it makes you happier, we can say a more conservative 70hp from the remap alone.

as from US side I sensed Dinan in the very begining.

Well ok maybe the V8, but the normal 3L petrol what can you do? replacement or supercharge not much only for a remap, I mean do you really get a lot of performance from that??? how do you give more than 20hp to a petrol, really just curious as big tuners can "only" max that...

For BMW 530i
Approx. 19 hp / 14 kW power increase, approx. 25 Nm torque increase

UUronL,

You are probably right about an extra 100bhp for the 535. I had an A6 2.7T and know that a MTM (tuner for Audis) remap brought it to at least 330 vs. 250bhp from the factory.

Three questions:
1) If you lease the car, can you "un-map" it before turning it back in?
2) If you bring it in for service, will the SA be able to tell it was re-mapped and void your warranty?
3) Does fuel economy decrease proportionately with bhp gains?

If these are non-issues, I will forgo the 550i for a 400bhp 535i!

Ats,
I think turbo is the key ingredient here, correct me if I'm wrong. If I can get 70hp and 50lb-ft of torque just from remap alone, it'd be no brainer to me. 370hp and 350lb-ft for a 3500lb car, it'd would be really fun. However, can current I6 block handle that much of hp and torque? What about long term reliability? That's another big question that we need to bear in mind.

I think we were misunderstanding one another. When you said petrol I think you meant naturally aspirated (no turbo) petrol. I agree, there is very little that can be done with those engines and there are very few aftermarket tuning options.

In all my statements about the yet-to-be-released 535i - I was referring to the new twin turbo inline 3L 6 petrol engine. It will start with 300hp and 300 lb/ft of torque by US measurements.

These are all good questions.

1) To be extra careful, I'd suggest buying a spare ECU and modding that one - you can always sell it and re-insert the old one when you return it. I doubt the lease inspector would ever check - going by my lease turn-ins the inspection is really very cursory.
2) Perhaps. Some of the tuning companies (APR) will let you load multiple programs and switch between them with the winshield wiper stalk. APR only does VW/Audi/Porsche, but maybe some of the tuners who do BMW have adopted the same idea. APR lets you load programs like valet, stock, tuned on normal gas, and tuned with racing gas. You could always load the stock program if the tuners had such an option when you scheduled a service.
3) Dunno. I have heard conflicting things.

I suppose Dinan could solve all these problems by releasing a remap that is installed by the dealer and fully covered under warranty like all other Dinan modifications. That would be the best case.

Well DMS are the masters at diesel re-maps in the UK and they claim their re-map is undetectable with BMW diagnostic equipment. They say the only way to find it would be to ship the ECU back to Germany and analyse it there.

They also (and forum members agree) say economy improves after re-map.

No reason why the 335i shouldn't be the same cause it's really the turbo that they are tweaking.
