Thumbs up

I have a 04 530d and i am thinking about selling it and get a new 5-series...

what should i buy ?

I rather like the idea of a lavish 540..

Diesel is fun and the torque is immense... but as I see it the torque figures of the 540 is adequate..

the M5 is out of the question because I really dont think it will last that long, and the SMG is not smooth enough around town...

Im also looking at 530i 530d and 535d... what about the 550 ?

so.. 540.. is it any good ?

535D or 530D. I am happy with my 530d, but if you want the feel of the so called "m5 feel" get 535d break her in gently even like 3000-5000kms and then get that juiced upto 350hp 780Nm and who cares anymore on spending 130.000? on a petrol-eater no offence I still uv M5 but w these fuel prices :'( soon our mates in the US will know what we are talking about, diesel power: ///D

Don't forget that the 535i is just around the corner. That would be a better alternative than the 540i you are considering. More torque, better fuel economy.

There is a rumour going around that says that the new 3.0 liter with double turbo will be launched in September. I would go for the 540 thou. A V8 is nicer than a diesel, no offence guys!

It's not a diesel - it's a petrol 3L twin turbo. More info can be found here:

http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/bmw-...ine-ar3913.html

The 540i is a dead end upgrade path. For a nominal amount of cash, the 3L turbo will likely be able to realize horsepower gains of 50 to 100hp with no problems whatsoever.

The engine will certainly be launched in the fall with the 335i - it remains to be seen if the 5 will get it then as well.

Given the price spread between an similarly-optioned 550 and a 530 is $7K, I would assume the 535 would be priced mid-point, or about $3,500 less than a 550, yet the 550 has a roughly 55bhp advantage. The 550 seems like the better performance bargain IMHO.

If you did juice the 535, it may be on par, but then you will have warranty/reliability issues, so except for maybe fuel economy, why would one buy a 535? I am curious as I plan to get a 550 next - I heard the 6 cylinder 5-series have a lighter, more balanced feel, so maybe that would be the attraction?

Yes, mainly what you state - lighter up front + fuel economy. While I'm still on the fence about how I'd feel about aftermarket tuning if I owned a 535i, there is no denying the fact that it could be made to beat a 550i rather handily with a sub-$1000 investment.

I have always felt, and stated here in these forums that the introduction of a 535i in the US could be a good marketing opportunity - one that could be used to characterize the car as a sportier model - perhaps heralding the introduction of the M-Sport package here in the US. I could certainly imagine some Dinan performance chip offerings, intakes, and exhausts once this hits our shores as well.
