What is this button for?

My Ride: 2006 530xi. Deep green with beige interior. 6 speed manual. Premium package.
OK - I think I figured out everything on my car, but there is one button that I haveno idea what it does. On the high beam stalk there are two buttons on the side. The top one activates the check control. What does the bottom one do?

(1) blank
(2) average speed
(3) average consumption
(4) range
dont worry - go ahead & try - it's not the EJECTION button

You know on my way to work this AM I was wondering if I could change the average mph display. I was not even sure how it got there. Now I know.
BTW, I am no longer going to push a button over and over - My car taught me a lesson about that the first night. The car ejected me! Just kidding - but it did create a radio issue.
I appreciate everyone's help.

And BTW - I went to the parking lot - got the manual out of the car and looked through it for 5 minutes before I asked for help here. You guys answered the question in less time than that.

Not really, but I, for one, have read some parts--those that seem most "critical" to "everyday" functioning. Hey, but, whatever, I am glad to help if I happen to know something.
