Interesting discussion.
Being from Germany, those long option lists seem just to be normal for me. All German premium car makers (Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Porsche) had them for years, Porsche being worst. The lists are very similar between the manufacturers in offered options and pricing. In my mind, I add at least 10.000 Euro for extras, when I?m considering a new car, that will give me my minimum requirements I want in a car, like leather, good stereo, good a/c and some things on top, maybe nicer wheels, comfort access, HUD or similar.

Remember, car prices are much lower in the US anyway, even a German car like my 550, delivered to the US, costs at least 10k less than in its home market, because BMW just can?t get the money out of the market. And they already throw in quite a number of things, which go as an extra in Europe, f.e. metallic paint, sunroof, xenon lights and some more.

So, stop whining or go and buy a Lexus

In our BMW the biggest rip off to me is the satellite radio. If you guys really want some rip offs check out some of the options for Porsche. Their option for a short shift kit - which is standard equipment on a freaking Mustang GT - costs $700, but you can buy an OEM after market for about $230 which is what I did. Colored wheel crests - $200, and lots of other Mickey Mouse BS expensive options that you would think should be standard on a car with a 74k base price. Full leather seats is another option. Are you F'ing kidding me? Anyway, all cars companies seem to rip you off on options and BMW is bad, but no where near as bad as Porsche.
Couldn't agree more, before ordering my E60, I toyed with the idea of opting out of the company car scheme and getting a Boxster S.... soon went off the idea when a fairly basic car came to ?47k

Couldn't believe that Porsche charge extra for SPORTS SUSPENSION!!!!

Biggest rip offs on 5-series in my opinion are ?110 for mats, and the ?605 option for dual zone aircon on UK cars (already mentioned in this thread) as both of these should be standard on a car like this.

I do think the sports steering wheel is good value at ?70 though

FOLD DOWN BACKSEATS THROUGHLOAD!!

this absolutely useless feature, should have been included. not only has it never been used, the one and only time that I needed it, the item cannot fit through the opening (too high).
in the end it has to go in the back seat.
they charge CAD$700 for it! RIPOFF for sure.

Hang on - I have just come from an A4 and it was just the same issues. No centre armrest, no rear electric windows (well I got them by getting the SE). I guess I'm not comparing like with like, but still could have doubled the base price of an A4 with extras.

I am VERY happy with my 2 week old E60 although I did not go overboard on the extras, I was still expecting to feel let down by the interior quality and my initial feelings are very good.

The only solution to the "option expenses" and rip off pricing is to go Japanese - they throw in all the extra kit for a reason!!

This is the exact reason I never go for it. But I don't want it even if it's free. The more moving parts the more noise you get. And at least in the E39 it would weaken the body.

Just my 2 cents.

Concur satellite radio as the biggest rip off. Next down the line are the RUNFLATs. Heavy, noisy, still will go flat, and lose air pressure faster than other tires. I want a refund on my satellite radio option.

When you see that the comfort access is only $500 on a e90 then you spend $20,000 more to move up to an E60 and ohhh the cost is $1000 for the same option. If we are gonna get ripped off, at least BMW should be consistent between models on how much they are ripping us off by. Don't ya think?

I didn't order it, it seems to add to the possibility of theft. Oh and its overpriced.
For the 3 series Comfort Access, it only works on the front doors. While our Comfort Access works on all 4 doors, hence the increase in price.

Folded down my rear seats once to check if it worked, yep it worked alright... and would not latch on properly again; had to bring it for adjustment.

The ski through load is useless! I would have rather they just given me an actual bag, and I'd rather slide that through the fold down rears; instead of being restricted by that stupid little opening which can barely hold 1 pair of skis.
