My Ride: 530i Touring, M Sport, build date 10/05, Silver Grey, Black leather, Maple Anthracite, Anthracite roof lining, panorama roof, M Aerodynamic, M Steering wheel, M Sport suspension, sport seats, shadow line, 135 M wheels, Goodyear NCT 5 runflats, and some other stuff too.
I don't think I would call it rip-off, after all you have the choice but anyway its also dealers getting their cut, because they get bigger margins on the options than on the basic car.
Ripoffs.
The electronics, such as pro nav, tv, logic 7 premium sound, etc. Why, because this is pretty much all mass made junk that costs BMW sweet FA, most of it coming from Asia and should be standard in a car at this level. It's not like the sound system is made by Linn or Naim.

My Ride: 2013 535i (White with Oyster Interior. Premium Package, Navigation, Technology Pacakge, Park Distance Control, and Rear View Camera)
Good subject.
1. Automatic transmission: Can't believe I still have to pay extra on a 60,000 car.
2. Leather: It's NOT standard...??
3. NAV: I think it's not too bad. Other cars charge about the same.
4. Confort Access: Way overpriced. $300 is fair price.
5. Night Vision: It's really for people that has too much money to spend.

In our BMW the biggest rip off to me is the satellite radio. If you guys really want some rip offs check out some of the options for Porsche. Their option for a short shift kit - which is standard equipment on a freaking Mustang GT - costs $700, but you can buy an OEM after market for about $230 which is what I did. Colored wheel crests - $200, and lots of other Mickey Mouse BS expensive options that you would think should be standard on a car with a 74k base price. Full leather seats is another option. Are you F'ing kidding me? Anyway, all cars companies seem to rip you off on options and BMW is bad, but no where near as bad as Porsche.

Basic 911 starting price is 72,000. After view must have options, the price can easily go over 90,000.

True about the Porsche. A friend went to buy a Cayenne a few years ago and was shocked at how few things came standard in the Cayenne S. his $120k car was going to cost $160k. Something like $8000 extra for air suspension and the list went on, roof rails, extra, front parking sensors extra etc etc. I think though that they got some bad feedback because they later made the air suspension standard equip and didn't really up the price.
Part of the reason I bought my Allroad 4 years ago was because nearly everything was standard on the car, except nav. and the price was okay when that was brought into the equation.

Comfort Access for $1,000, and I refused to pay for it.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.

Second, I'd really question your anecdotal evidence about the "two rolls of headliner"; pardon me, but that's BS. These interiors are OEM-3rd party-sourced modules, and PREFORMED at that. There haven't been any "rolls of headliner" in decades, if ever.
Now, the substitution price is a marketing issue, just like at teh restaurant; I can't fault them for hitting a buyer who wants something like this...remember, it's what the market will bear. If you are willing to pay $500 for a dark headliner, you deserve it.
