what year and models ??
As for models (once again don't hold me to this because I'm referring to my fuzzy memory), all gasoline powered 525s, 530s, 545/550s had it as a no cost option over the automatic.

2004 to 2007 you could get the SMG tranny in the 5 series (M5 you can still get it). Models I know for sure are the 530, 545, 550i, and don't hold me to this but I believe the 525 though rare.
Its not the same as the SMG in the M5 or M3. Difference is in the M cars they have six different settings. Last two settings are quite extreme in shifting. Made more for the track or drag racing then driving around town.
5 series SMG has basically two setting in manual or auto. Which is Sport on or off. With sport on(which the way most people drive) it shifts nice and quick. With it off there is a slight pause to help smooth things out for the inexperience driver. Auto feature in SMG isn't to great and I'm not sure why anyone would want to be in auto for driving around town. It be like buying a manual and wishing you had an automatic, makes no sense.
Nicest thing about SMG is the prefect rev match downshift every single time. A pro can't even do that in a manual everytime. Which is part of the reason that two equal BMW's one with SMG and one Manual that the SMG will win everytime around the track with all other things being equal.

The 525i never had the chance to be married with the SMG. Discontinued in Feb/early March? 2007 when the last non-SMG cars we produced.
