Water sucked into engine?
I was wondering if this has happened to anyone. First I have an AFE intake in my car. I was driving on the freeway through much standing water and next thing I know my CEL was one and my car was sputtering and shaking really bad. When I stepped on the gas, nothing would happen except continuing sputter and my car was coasting with very minor throttle response. I got it off the freeway and it drove very slowly while sputtering to a parking lot. I shut off the engine for 10 minutes, then restarted it and all was fine. This was 5 days ago and no problem since.
I remembered one other time in very hard rain my CEL came on but never had a noticable problem like this. I was worried at the time then thought about how that would make sense that something like that may happen with water sucked into the engine. I have driven through some big rain storms so not sure how the water got sucked in just right. I am assuming this could still happen with a stock system since water can penetrate any air filter.

The air intake is very low in these cars and infact BMW has a warning in the manual about not "driving thru water over 1 foot deep and then only at "walking speed", otherwise the vechicle's engine, the electrical systems and the transmission may be damaged". Page 133 in my 2008 manual, sure it is similar for your 545.

The problem is that the rain doesn't have very many places to go, so the roads get significant puddles with only 20 minutes of rain.
