If they need to replace the CAS (Car Access System - this is basically the stuff that manages whether your keys start the car, whether your doors should open when someone presses the button on a key, etc.), it is quite sensible to make sure that you are the legit owner of the car. Otherwise, anybody showing up and saying "it's faulty" can get the car remapped to suit his keys! (and you locked out of your own vehicle)

BTW - an orange triangle as per FWeiss's pictures only means that the OBC has some bad news - could be a burnt out bulb or a broken engine. No way to tell without pressing the "check" button on your indicator stalk or calling up a status report on the idrive screen. The symbol will stay there until the computer believes the fault is rectified...

take it to the dealer, if your idrive says dtc malfunction, many other ppl have been getting that problem, including myself. easy fix
