I start but do not drive off until IDrive is fully booted and I hit the accept screen(maybe 20 seconsd).

On a related note regarding the variable redline tick marks; They do represent the MAX RPM. As a little expriment when the engine was mostly warm and the tick marks were about 5000, I put the car in M1 while stopped. I drove off in M1 and it shifted to M2 at the the beggining of tick marks, 5000 RPM.

How about idling like sitting in a parking lot with the heat on!

In Stop and go traffic tough luck buddy.

Hey smart butt by the time you reach the stop light you have moved the car quite a bit unless your stop light is in the middle of your driveway or right in front of your house. If so start your engine halfway between the red light then you wont be waiting there that long with a frozen engine!

PLUS a stop light isnt THAT long.

Normally i will just drive off immediately after starting the engine... it won't cause any harm right?

You are in CA. you're fine. Unless you drive to the MTNS which have temps in the NEGATIVES else no harm... if kept under 3500 RPMS or so before the car fully warms up.

Drive off right away, but slowly, don't rev it too much.

I start it up, check the display while putting my seat belt on, set the entertainment/idrive, check the mirrors and accelerate medium until it's at temp (a few minutes).
