Can anyone let me know what I need to do on my MY2006 to get voice control active. It was not a specified option (extended voice control) but do you get any voice control as standard..? Have the steering wheel button but haven't had a "response" as yet from the car.. I had read on this forum that it is purely a s/w option that dealers can apply..If so what are the costs on the UK..?

I had the same question a couple of months ago when my car was new. I was then told that you must have navi (I don't) for voice response to be active. I never pursued it since I don't like my cars to talk to me, but I'll be interested to see other responses.

Yes you'll need Navigation. Specifically I think you need Professional NAV and not just Business Nav for the UK.

Apparently that is not enough. I have nav pro, and bluetooth, but in Europe, voice is not standard (it is in US ONLY).

I think you have to ask your dealer how expensive would be to have this option.

Anyone else with a solution is also welcome.

Oh wow... I thought it was standard with Nav Pro even in Europe... Interesting... Dang so Nav here was such a "bargain" I should have gotten it!

Hi ...

According to the 2005/2006 BMW 5 Series Accessory brochure (in the UK) :-

"Voice Input. Enable operation of navigation, telephone and most iDrive commands via voice command. Only for cars with Professional Navigation System."

Description is a 'Retrofit Kit', Part No. 84 64 0 396 162 - Price : ?49.95

Looks like (especially at such a low price) a simple replacement of the iDrive 'MENU' button with a smaller 'MENU' button plus a 'Talking Head' button. Presumably you already have a 'Talking Head' button on your steering wheel ?

Hope this helps.

Robert.

Regardless of the button you also require a software upgrade. Total cost of the upgrade is in the region of ?200-?250 depending on which dealer you speak to. Most of it is labour cost.

Agree with SKK. Also some older (UK) cars may require the insertion of a mic in the headlining, so i am told.
