The 520i engine is the same as the OLD (e46) 320i engine.
BMW dropped this engine in favour of the 2.0litre 4 cyl engine in the NEW (e90) 320i, which meant it was no longer available for the e60.
Hence the introduction of the 523i.
The old 2.2 litre engine is only used in the OLD 3 series coupe now and will not be continued when the new coupe is introduced.
