Our new 550 runs very rough on cold start up each morning (not that cold - located in So Cal). It is not like a higher idle - it is stumbling all over itself and sounds very sick. Once it has been driven - it runs excellent.

Went to dealer- they reprogrammed - and it is still doing that.

Anyone else experience this?

I have a 530 and for the first 500 or so miles it did the same. Now I have 1300 miles and it sounds much better. I never took it to the dealership I just figured it needed to get past break in.

Thanks DEazy -

We have a few thousand miles now - still doing it.

Dealer tried to tell us that it had to be Chevron gas only (which I have always used since I have a gas card) and using bad gas must be the issue. -

Guess it is going back in next week.

Guess I buck the trend. Have a 7 day old 530 D (231) and it is silky smooth on start up. Still only got 250 miles on her after a week. Cant wait till run in

I have a 2007 550i that does the same thing. very very rocky on start.. lucky if the engine doesn't stall.

i also notice that if i am going very slow, almost coasting, at say 10-20mph, then touch the pedal , but not too much, the enging makes a grinding/pinging noise.. anyone else?

Kirk, there's been a number of posts highlighting similar issues and I've had something like this on my 545. I was never happy with cold idle and after a couple of CIP updates they ended up adjusting the valve tolerances. It has made a difference, but it's still there from time to time. It's almost like the car has good days and bad days, and it's most noticeable when cold (as you have seen). Keep us posted as a number of us are in the same boat but yours sounds like it might be at the more noticeable end of the spectrum.
Good luck.

Oh, boy. This problem is more common on 550 than 545. Some has the same problem on 545i.

Yes, my 550 does the same. I like your choice of words, "stumbling all over itself!" After a few minutes, its fine. I'm hoping it goes away after another few 2Ks. Have only 2k now. I'll be following this closely over the next few months.

Mine does that too. Although according to the SA, it has has been fixed after a software upgrade. Haven't got the car back yet...will report back after I get it.
