Filter is being cleaned!

Exhaust is hot, cracking sometimes after leaving the car, smells "burnt", strange "sporty" noise from exhaust...

Everything is fine, don't worry.

I own a 2004 530d with automatic transmission and 50.000 on the klock.

my problem is the gearbox. Normaly it shifts smoothly and nice at comfy low revs when i drive normaly i "D"

But sometimes the automatic transmission changes mode (with gearlever in "D") and start to use first gear A LOT!

and keep on in 1st gear up to 2500-3000 rpm whit very jerky shifts. the box is reluctant to shift and this is not affected by how my throttle use... even if i want to drive nice and slow.

i might add that the engine-note changes somewhat when this problem occurs.

I apologize for spelling erros and such.. I am from norway and i am very frustrated!!

please write som thoughts... im going out of my mind thinking about this,.
It can only be the particulate filter - if your exhaust is the straight kind. If the ends turn down in the 'usual' diesel way then you have the older model like me.

The auto box has 2 modes each for D and DS (economy and extreme economy) and (sport and extreme sport)

My guess is that you are generally driving smoothly and are thus in 'extreme economy' mode, but then if you corner fast, accelerate hard or brake strongly 'economy' will be engaged meaning the car will upshift later.

It then takes a little while, driving gently again, for the car to calm down and go back to 'extreme economy'

In my car, before I had the software update, this switchover used to be quite random. I had the new software put on when my ipod connection was fitted and since then - no problem.

My suggestion would be to report your problem to the dealer and let him solve it - that way you should wangle the upgrade for free.
