Recently traded my E39 535i in for an E60 530i. Really pleased with the new wheels until I came back to it in a car park and some F***er had put a 12 inch scratch on the bonnet!

So I need some advice on where to take it to get it sorted. It's a BMW individual colour - kind of a very dark Green which in different lights can look black, blue, or green! So am I best to take it to BMW, or will I get just as good a job from an independent garage without getting stung on the price?

(I'm in Chesham in Buckinghamshire, UK if anyone has a particular recommendation)

Ouch!!! Sorry to hear what happened. Some people just don't have respect for others property. Check security, maybe they have cameras that caught the act. Regarding the scratch, check a good detailing shop and see if if they can buff it out. If not, a good body shop can surely match the color. GL

My hood was vandalized in the summer and I went to BMW first to get a quote and they quoted $750. I then took it to a guy thats worked on our Lexus before and he could not get it out as the whole hood needs a repaint. I say take it to BMW .

How deep is the scratch? If it can't be wetsanded and buffed....which it sounds like it cant because usually vandal scratches are down to the primer or past it. Individual color can be matched but it's even more difficult than a factory color. In any case it will need to be blended with the old paint because you will never get the same exact match even if it's a standard color. BMW has about 5-6 different shades per color. I've painted many BMW's and any BMW certified shop will tell you they mix their own paint in-house and match it by blending it. Just an illusion really...it's never 100%

I doubt you get a true match, especially on an individual color, w/o going to BMW for the paint. A good indy shop, preferably BMW certified, could do the repaint, however.

Some of the independant scratch remover companies are good, but you need to go on personal recommendation, don't just phone one without references.

I has some idiot scratch my bumper. He was reversing into a 60ft wide space, but managed to run his car down my bumper !!! went down the the platic and the car was in le mans blue, but they still got the scratch out and re-coloured for 80 pounds.

This thread is another reason why I avoid metallic colors. They are a lot harder to touch up and match.

My car is onyx blue - another individual colour, looks blue/blue green/purple in different lights.
I had my whole front end repainted due to stone chips and a couple of small scratches.
I took the car to a very experienced independent painter, and when he looked up the colour in his system, he said there was actually only 1 shade of it, i.e. it was rather unproblematic to mix compared to some other colours.
In the end the final colour matched up perfectly well the rest of the car and I was very happy.
A good indy shop will be able to do the job
