I had mine done already, the car idles rougher, I still hear the lifters tapping and the car hessitates to start still.
I didnt ask to have this performed but they said this would help the hessitation.

Hey Ziering,
What was your original complaint as to merit the lifter replacement? I am making my case against my dealer to have the lifters replaced due to excessive taping noises. I don't want to spent all these work without solving the problem. Can you elaborate further?

Like I said the car would not start and the idle was all over the place, the tapping for sure sounds like worn parts and a poor oil ciculation issue. They replaced the oil at 5500 miles not 15,000 so there must be a reason.
Car still taps and runs like garbage. I noticed after they removed these LEVERS the car does not run smooth anymore.
It's important they re-program the valvetronic module after replacing the new levers, otherwise the engine will have the old settings.
My engine is still smooth running at idle - and I have a feeling the acceleration is slightly stronger and smoother. Tapping is good as gone when the engine is warm, and only slight tapping can be heard when cold, but over a range of a few hundred rpm. Definite difference from before. When Hobi was at my house and I test drove his 545i with the paddles, I noticed also a slight tapping, which is the normal valvetronic operation. There is ALWAYS a slight "tikking" noise from the Valvetronic operation. This is normal with any BMW engine encompassing this technology.
SpeedracerF4i's problem seems that there is very pronounced tapping noise, possibly suggesting severely out of tolerance levers.

Mine were replaced a few months ago, the tapping / ticking was getting worse and worse. It took two attempts to get the problem fixed, on the second visit to the dealer I requested that my SA and the shop forman come with me to listen to the problem. They both agreed that it was not normal and performed the repair. The car has run great since. Hope everything works out for you guys.

BMWNA called yesterday saying that the FSE's declaration that my problem was normal will stand. My only chance now is to appeal his decision through BMW's regional managers. I don't know who that may be, but I will call the dealer for it. I am feeling like an ass for not fighting and puting my car for sale already. Why am I taking a $10,000 depreciation hit (6500 miles only) when there are fixes out there.
I have a final appeal with the FSE this Friday 7/29. For those with V8, can you guys tell me if you have this tapping problem or not? I want to show it to the Field Engineer that not all V8 have this noise. Please chime in in this post[I]
SpeedracerF4i,
See my post above, it was definitely a problem for me with the same symptoms you describe. My dealer performed the fix after the BMWNA rep visited the dealership and they verified the dates / tolerence stamps on the levers. I can certainly say that the noise is 100% gone and my engine sounds like it should now. The only thing you really hear at idle is the electric fan for the radiator. Keep after it and the best of luck.
