I was at the dealer recently and they said my vacuum pump needed to be replaced. my car has 66,000 miles, what are the signs that the vacuum pump is going out or needs to be replaced? my car is not under warranty and that is expensive to replace so i wanted to check here to see if anyone knows why or when this needs replacing. i have a 2005 545i.
thanks.
thanks.

First off I gotta be a punk to you and give you a hard time for not even trying to use the search function. This is an issue that can be easily found even with our not so user friendly search menu for nooks ![](https://5series.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/angry.gif)
With that said, I 'm sure your pump is operating just fine. One of 2 seals within your pump is going bad. They are "O" rings that deteriorate over time and need to be replaced. One of them is located inside (or actually in between) the pump itself and the other is used to seal the pump to it's respective pieces. (the second "O" ring is not sold by BMW, but I'm sure you can source one).

You can see the two rings I am referring to.
Find a local indy and the labor should cost you less than the original parts BMW quoted you for. ....Hopefully

If the cover o-ring is leaking, it is an easy task to remove the cover and seal the o-ring with an appropriate sealant. I used Hylomar which essentially sealed the entire cover to the body of the pump.

thanks so much guys, appreciate your patience as i am a newbie so forgive my "newness." still learning the site and the car, but so glad i found this site. very informative and helpful.
as i just bought this 2005 545i with 66,000 miles, i was getting an extended warranty for another 48,000, so i hope that will cover some of the problems that may arise.
thanks again.
