Am I wrong in thinking that if it's running too cold, then those little indicator marks on the rev counter would fail to move up to the normal range? I know when I start my car the lines come around as low as 5,000rpm but after 5 minutes or so they're up to around 6,200rpm. Maybe it would stay below 6,000rpm (even after 5-10 minutes) if it's running too cold.
Yes and no. It's true that if you see the tick marks move away slower than usual, you can suspect something is not right. And if they never go up to the "nominal" position you'd be sure that it's running cool. But you only need to get to about 70-75 degrees C to have all the tick marks disappear, and that's 30 degrees below nominal!

Is it really 70-75 degrees to move white lines to be in normal temp?
That means it's long way from optimal temp to push
I thought it was pretty much in working temp to push. I better wait a bit more

Another question,
am I the only one that white dot lines never fully disappear?
I think 3-4 dots are always there after fully warmed up.

I also still have 3-4 dots after warm up. You also see 3-4 dots on most cars - I think they're just the normal indicator that you're in the time-to-change-gear-soon zone. Then again, maybe if your car is overheating they'll go away. Who knows?

I'm also re-thinking my warming up policy a bit now. I generally stayed below 4,000rpm until it went to "normal". Mind you, even after it got to normal, there's nowhere within 10 minutes of my house that I'd want to be red-lining my car anyway, so I think I'd rarely exceed 5,500rpm until after 15 minutes.

Damn damn Damn
I always thought BMW replaced the needle to those white dotted lines to make it better for drivers recognize your engine is ready to WOT
but it seems that it's not that accurate.

Hello all,

What temperature is your V8 (545 and 550) running at when warm? I just changed the thermostat on my 545 and now it's stable at 102-105?C when warm, is that normal? Seems pretty high to me, should I be worried?

You can check your coolant temp from the OBD by doing the following:

1) Turn ignition key to position 1 (Radio)
2) Press and hold Trip button until 01.__ appears.
3) The car?s chassis number will soon appear below this ? add the last five digits together, and remember this total for later on.
4) Press and hold Trip button to get 01.__ again, and then keep pressing the Trip button repeatedly until menu ?19 Lock On? appears
5) As soon as 00 appears below it, immediately keep pressing the Trip button until this figure reads the same as the total number of the last five digits of the chassis number which were added together previously
6) Wait momentarily until menu 01.__ appears, and then press the Trip to get menu 07.__, and the temp. will appear.
If the car is started from this menu, you will get a continuous temp. read-out until the ignition is switched off again.

The above instructions are from this post, worked like a charm.
Is this procedure unique to a V-8 only? I assume it will work for any e60? I want to check my 04/530i. Does anyone know what the standard operating range for the inline 6 should be? I want to watch my temp as I sit with the car not moving for a little while.
