Hello all,
What temperature is your V8 (545 and 550) running at when warm? I just changed the thermostat on my 545 and now it's stable at 102-105?C when warm, is that normal? Seems pretty high to me, should I be worried?
You can check your coolant temp from the OBD by doing the following:
1) Turn ignition key to position 1 (Radio)
2) Press and hold Trip button until 01.__ appears.
3) The car?s chassis number will soon appear below this ? add the last five digits together, and remember this total for later on.
4) Press and hold Trip button to get 01.__ again, and then keep pressing the Trip button repeatedly until menu ?19 Lock On? appears
5) As soon as 00 appears below it, immediately keep pressing the Trip button until this figure reads the same as the total number of the last five digits of the chassis number which were added together previously
6) Wait momentarily until menu 01.__ appears, and then press the Trip to get menu 07.__, and the temp. will appear.
If the car is started from this menu, you will get a continuous temp. read-out until the ignition is switched off again.
The above instructions are from this post, worked like a charm.

Wish there was a temp gauge...
At a minimum, the I Drive, which has about 10,000 functions as it is, should have the temp info. After all it has the oil level info.

I used the search function to find this topic. I just replaced the thermostat on mine, because of the same increase emissions light. Before I replaced it my car was running around 83c. After I replaced i using a Whaler Thermostat it was running 100-102c for an easy 4 mile drive, and running in my garage. The dealership wanted $450 to replace the thermostat. It required about an hour of my time including fill up and drive, plus gallon of fluid and $57 part.

Yes, I was also amazed by what the dealer asked to have it changed. I did it myself too and as you say it's easy.
So it seems around 105?C is normal running temp for the V8, thanks to all for posting!
Alex: 125?C sounds really high, I would have thought the cooling system was designed/dimensioned to keep the car at operating temp even while driving in the city!

temperature range not normal temperature.
Normal driving should fairly stay in one temperature or there about, however, quick spirited driving could
yield high engine temperature temporarily, but won't stay there long.
125 does sound a bit high but acceptable under lot's of stop and go traffic.
But I'm no mechanic, what do I know..

Horrific looking procedure. I don't think I'll bother. I know if my car's running too hot then the iDrive will let me know about it with an annoying noise.
It's true that the car will tell you when running too hot, but not when running too cool which was the problem I had (thermostat not closing).

Yes, it is somewhat convoluted, but very useful as a diagnostic.
