Do you have an AUX audio option on your iDrive entertainment menu? Is this a new install of the AUX adapter?

...also be aware the the AUX input in the E60 is almost always of very low volume, compared to any of the other inputs (FM, AM or CD). You might really have to crank it to hear anything.

As already stated you will have to switch / toggle between the different audio sources (FM, AM, CD & AUX) on your iDrive menu and select AUX. Once your device is then connected with the lead, you will need to ensure your device (e.g. iPod) is set to 'play' and not on 'pause' and that the volume is turned 'up' on both the device and on the car's stereo - my advice would be to set your device volume to maximum and then control the overall volume by the car's volume control.

Agreed that the volume level is reduced to that of the other sources but I find it is still generally acceptable. Other than that, and the lack of control of tracks etc. via iDrive (which the USB option resolves) it works fine.

I started using my AUX input yesterday with my Ipod until I get my ipod interface hooked up, sounds good so far. I turn the volume all the way up on the ipod just like i do when i use the ipod in my truck. i do not have any sound quality issues with mine.
