good question. viscosity will always be accurate. the brand you bu from wont be from bottle to bottle, but viscosity will be. dont know what the best is, but i am sure the oil filler cap says it. my car is downtstairs in the garage. i will go look in a minute, but i am making scrambled turkey and egg whites
turkey or turkey bacon? actually, doesn't matter - I can't even think about food - I went to this little Uzbekistanian restaurant tonight and had myself some grilled lamb and chicken kebabs... Ho-Ly sheeeet, dude - that's some meat right there! and the whole thing was like 3 bucks per portion of kebab, so naturally i had me like four of them bad boys not to mention the lamb and vegetable soup... this may not sound like it, but I guaran-dam-tee you - its some of the BEST food you can eat in NY. And cheap too - three of us stuffed our faces for 50 bucks, including tip and tax

Your E60 has a twin turbo charge engine with a 15,000+/- oil change intrival.

I would only use the approved oil listed by BMW, the difference in costs is small relitive to the cost of the car.

If you are going to use Mobil one I believe the 0W40 European formula is a approved oil.

I always used Mobil 1 0W40 on my VWs and Audi. Called BMW service to ask if it was okay to use with my 530. He said it is probably the best after BMW high performance oil.

M1 0w40 is the only BMW approved Mobil-1 oil (Carries the LL-01 certification). This is the european formula which is supposed to be a true synthetic (group IV base oil) as opposed to the 5w30 M1, etc. which I've heard are not group IV based. If you plan on changing the oil every 5-8K miles, the Mobil 5w30 is probably fine. Don't go 15K miles on an oil that doesn't carry the LL-01 or BMW could deny warranty repairs if an oil-related failure occurs.

To the OP... I have seen E60 filters sold at Advanced Auto - I believe under the Purolator label. When you open the box and look, you are really getting a Mann OEM paper cartridge filter made in Germany. The cost I believe was about $16.00.. Ouch. They are even more expensive if purchased at the dealer parts counter. I buy Mann OEM filters online for roughly half that price.

I do my own oil changes (to cut the OCI interval BMW covers in half) and use either the BMW High Performance 5w30 oil or the German Castrol (Syntec 0w30 - states Made in Germany on the back of the bottle). German Castrol is stocked at many Autozone stores, but not all.

So I am thinking about doing my own oil change and using Mobil One 5W-30. Sounds like most buy the oil from the dealer but really what difference could it make? How bad would it be? Also was wondering, does any retailer sell oil filters for the E60?
As long as you make sure it meets the specs and use the correct viscosity, you will be fine.

Oil opinions ..... everybody has one.

I believe Castrol is the manufacturer of BMW oil, which makes good oils. I was a long time castrol user. When I switched years ago to Synthetic, I switched to Mobile 1 as in the beginning, they had the lead in Synthetics. Since my car was new, I have been using AMSOIL full synthetic. IMO, I think they put their money into the oil and not the advertising. I am at 75k, change my oil every 7500 miles and don't need to add a drop in between.

I ran a Chevy blazer with Castrol, frequent changes and had 195k on it when I sold it and no oil burning issues.

Have not found filters outside of BMW. And they are expensive....$25.00/pop.

"I always used Mobil 1 0W40 on my VWs and Audi. "

0W40 is probably fine for y'all north of the Mason-Dixon line, but in Houston where it gets as "low" as 50F at night in December and up to 100F in the afternoon during June-September (I'm digging the timed vent control) I figured that I'd be fine with Mobil 1 5W or 10W30. I use it in my wife's turbo-charged Volvo every 7500 miles.

The oil filler cap says to use Castrol, which I presume is the OEM for the BMW-branded oil. BMW oil doesn't cost very much more/quart than Mobil 1 bought at Costco or Autozone. I'll probably use the BMW oil from now on- I just happened to have a case of Mobil 1 on hand.

Try getting your filters from Garry at BMW of Newport. gromani@bmwofnewport.com

Buy one or two with some other parts and the combined discount and freight will make things come out fine. I paid $8.50/filter the last go around.

You can also try these sites for decent pricing, but make sure that you check our dealer out, too because the freight can sometime kill you. Some dealerships will give you a 10-15% discount if you present your BMW CC membership card.

German Filters
AutohausAz

I'd stay with the Mann filters as that's what comes in the BMW box.

Good luck.

My favorite oil is not on the approved list, Red Line 5-30W. I use it for my non dealer oil change at 7,500 miles. My engine is quieter on red line than the dealers stuff.

Mobil 1 is good stuff, Porsche's and Vette's use it as factory fill. You won't have a problem using it but I would get the filters from a BMW specific parts dealer, BAVAUTO, Turner Motorsport etc

I use Mobile 1 0-40w. Can't go wrong with it. Mobile 1 European formula is going to be one of the best oils on the market. Very few are going to be better.

Interesting BMW say you can use the Val. Syn 5w-30 but every time I've stop in the store to look at a bottle it doesn't list BMW LL01 approved on it.
