Interesting info... I had similar experience why I got my car in July, but after the update through a new "Box" the problem seemes to be solved. Also, before the update, when using non-approved USB memory sticks the iDrive showed some kind of hexadecimal code instead of, say "JetFlash". After the upgrade, it says "<unknown" without the ">". in the end.

Thanks - this is certainly enough to get my wife's E70 a free software update ... and I will have a chat to the dealer and tell them mine is doing the same thing and see what they say. But because the E60 is not listed on the SIB, they could refuse it (in a nice way of course) and say if it fixed the E60 it would be listed on the document as well.

Yes indeed, will do that when we take the X5 in. I'll say "I thought it was just me hitting the button or knocking something but now I've seen the X5 SIB I know I'm not imagining it".

Very few people seem to be experiencing it ... so seems an amazing coincidence that my wife's X5 and my 535d both have the same issue, built about 5 or 6 months apart, and different models. I still wonder if it's something to do with file format or the USB devices we're using... but I've tried so many different combinations that it can only be software/hardware in the car.
