Much as I love the iPod integration (I only listen to CDs if I forget my iPod), I have a screeching sound especially between tracks (because it is quiet then?) or when manually changing tracks.

I have only used one iPod with the car, but then it doesn't happen with my iPod with any other equipment, even using the bottom connector.

So is my problem the iPod, the BMW Y cable, or the car?

Simon

There is no way to determine, from your post, what the problem is. You need to follow standard process of elimination testing and then advise.

SOLVED !!

The screeching noise only happens on larger capacity ipods.

My 30gb has the noise between tracks sometimes, whereas my old Mini 4gb & my partners Nano gen2 do not have this issue at all.

I guess there is a limit somewhere on HDD size that affects the noises being heard; obviously the Nano Gen2 is solid state vs HDD/Microdrive.

Not a perfect solution if you only have a larger capacity ipod, but 1000 tracks on my 4gb Mini is fine for me currently.

I'm still thinking the noise is something more related to a ground loop "whine" and not the capacity of the drive. I believe there are many people here that are using large capacity iPods with no "screeching" sounds as you describe...

Hmmm.... I also have this "whine" issue when changing tracks in my 2008 535xi. I've got an older 60gb iPod connected. I'll have to connect my iPhone and Nano to see if the problem is also present with them and report back.

Interesting -- maybe I missed this issue if it was posted earlier. Hopefully more people will chime in with their experiences (or point us to a link from an earlier discussion) to see if we have an iPod compatibility issue or some sort of RF interference issue...

Yeah, I never really thought about the "whine" until I saw this post. I've heard it since day one in my car. To me it sounds like some feedback as the hard disk drive seeks to find the next track to play.

Deff not a ground loop whine, those are far, far worse - the one in my home cinema had me tearing my hair out until I wired a direct feed to the junction.

It is almost a screeching (as mentioned in the previous post) of the hard drive locating the next song & possibly the cable picking up on the interference.

Maybe the drives in the smaller capacity ones have less distance to travel (I am not overly technical I'm afraid).

Perhaps there is not enough shielding on the cable itself - I'll try a USB & 3.5mm extension over the weekend and see if this works any better & perhaps try and shield the cable with something.

Very strange indeed...and in typical dealer fashion...."I've not heard of that before"

ho hum!

I use a cheap Sansa 2gb in the car with no problems.
