Maybe a silly question but, will you be able to play video from the ipod?

My thanks to Fatlab for the comprhensive details of his 4GB Sandisk Cruzer Flash Drive. Have ordered one from Amazon - ?28.62 inc delivery.
I'm not concerned about DRM as my main interest is in a more convenient way of listening to music from my CD collection in the car, while leaving the CDs themselves at home (unbaked and unfrozen).

Hopefully adding something to the USB/iPOD subject. I have received some info from BMW Service France regarding installation of USB devices. Loosely translated it seems that the audio interface USB (SA 6FL) permits use of various memory items when installed on a vehicle with Pro Radio or Business or Pro Nav. The items are specifically 4th generation iPODs, Nanos & iPOD minis. MP3 readers & USB keys specified as Mass Storage Devices. If the item does not appear when connected - it's not compatible. (v. french that!) USB-audio supports the following formats MP3, AAC, (aac,m4a, m4b) WAV/PCM (wav) & WMA (wma, asf) & playy lists in M3U format.
In case of difficulty in connecting consult PuMA 8195825-01 which contains reference to the specific iPOD cable adapter under BMW ref. 61 12 0 422 099) There is also available (I don't have it) a list of compatible MP3 players.
Finally and potentially problematic are the various iPOD software versions installed. The following have been 'tested' in March '07
iPOD 4th gen click wheel V3.1.1
iPOD photo V1.2.1
iPOD video 5th gen V1.1.1/1.1.2/1.2
iPOD nano V1.1/1.2/1.3
iPOD nano 2nd gen V1.0.2/1.1.1
iPOD mini 1st gen V1.2/1.4.1 There is a note here that after disconnecting the iPOD any changes made in the vehicle eg random repeat are made permanent in the iPOD, and changes back must then be made manually on the iPOD.
iPOD mini 2nd gen V1.4.1
What happens when Apple update their software, as they are always doing, is anybodys guess.

Someone with i-pod connection could confirm this. Is there a USB port availiable with i-pod connection retrofitting?

No Nick, No USB port available just the ipod conector cable.
I did an incorrect question, I meant does anyone know, whether or not, i-pod connection on pre LCI cars, uses USB routines, via integrated i-pod connecting cable

or, does it uses a different wire connection type, like (for example) serial, lan, ide, sata, scsi, etc?
Asking because I know that all Flash type memories are using USB protocol for connection with devices.
I talked to my dealer about the usb/ipod cable and he said that the dealership is giving them to all new car owners. I guess it really depends on each dealership and there approach to customer satisfaction.

Now it is cleared.
Take care my friend.

Just tried my 40Gb Gen 4 iPod with the standard USB cable and whilst the iPod starts to charge, the USB input option on the iDrive is greyed out. Tried various different orders of connecting and powering up but either way my PC formatted iPod would not be recognised.
Overpriced BMW cable here we come ....

Before you spend the cash make sure your iPod is set to "enable disk use" in itunes, apparently this makes all the difference. It then works just like any other usb device.. You only need the special cable if you have DRM protected music on the ipod which need needs to be decoded.
Not got mine yet but this is based on hours of research on this subject:::
Cheers,,,,,,,,,
