Default Unstable RPM and torque sensor error

Dear all,

I have an RHD 520i with M54 engine and 6-speed AT. Lately the car has been experiencing unstable RPM when it is deccelerating or cruising at around 1000 - 1500 RPM. By unstable RPM I mean that the RPM is fluctuating in range of 500 - 1000 RPM.

If I switch the transmission to Sport mode ("DS") the symptom (fluctuation) is gone; but lately, when I'm decelerating, the symptom is resurfacing.

If I check the central display it displays no fault, so I tried to get it scanned in a repair shop. The repair shop use a general automotive scanned, not a BMW standard. The result of the scanner said "Torque sensor error".

Is torque sensor equals to camshaft position sensor? or is it something else. What's the part number for M54 engine torque sensor and where is it located?

Any help would be very appreciated.

You can find the part number here, RealOEM.com - Select Your BMW Model.

If anything I would assume the crankshaft position sensor not the camshaft sensor. I have never heard of that though so it's beyond me. I would get a real scanner and see what it's actually stating. Maybe get a code to assist you in what the issue is
