Could just be situational. Maybe a headwind, different temperature, speed, road surface? All I'm sure of is that I saw 30 or 31 a couple of times in the four months or so I had the 138s, and haven't seen it since I put on the 124s. I guess I attributed it to the 275mm and 245mm contact patches causing more rolling resistance than the 225mm. Not really sure, though.
I thought I read somewhere that changing wheel sizes requires the speedometer/odometer to be recallibrated to report proper results...?

Whoa, I wasn't aware of the negative impact of putting larger than stock wheels on cars with automatic transmissions, plus it seems larger wheels are bad for the suspension.

It's all about the aspect ratio. A 245/40/18 is approximately the same rolling diameter as a 275/35/18, or a 225/50/17.

That's very good mileage! You can take a look here for real world figures by other drivers of automatic 530i.

I'm not sure why you find these figures hard to believe.

I normally average around 22.5 around town and easily 30 on the highway.
+1

If you're driving at a steady 50-80mph and spending a lot of time in 6th, you'll easily manage 30mpg. I managed 28mpg myself travelling across holland (at an average 65mph). Of course once I hit the border with Germany, and the average popped up to 140mph over the next 7 hours, strangely that mpg figure dropped somewhat

Guess we wont mention the 44mpg average I got this weekend then hehehehe, pretty reasonable fuel consumption from a petrol tho, but then I used to easily get around 30mpg from my old E34 525i Sport on a run, and thats nearly 18 years old

This was the best MPG I got in my car. I dont remember the exact mpg # but was unbelievable according to the 534 miles I had left till gas goes empty. Also I had f:245 and r:275. I dont think the tires really matter.

I'm getting an avg of 29 all town driving without the A/C on.

Took a long drive over the weekend around 130miles with the A/C on and i was getting 34.4mpg i probably could have gotten better without the A/C on.
