I have never met anbody in the UK who uses winter tyres. I had never heard of them, until I started looking at this forum.
Then again, I am a soft southerner !

ABC you spoke too soon!
Thanks for bringing on the snow, it was great fun out there in 3 inches of the stuff this morning.
I had forgotten how much fun it was to slide and control a RWD car.
Brought back many skidpan memories.

Glad you enjoyed my 'fluence. We can now move on to the role of winter tyres in snow or should we be buying snow tyres...

PS Out of the garage, couldn't reverse my car up the entire drive (25% incline) onto the road... even with all "DTC/DSC" off. Not that I was intending to go anywhere...

You either have to be insane or have money to burn to buy Winter tyres for the UK.
It rarely if ever snows here and when it does its a light sprinkling. The roads get gritted and everything is a-ok. The only place I could see use would be in Scotland.
PS2 are good in both summer and winter so why buy different tyres for approximately 2 weeks of 'cold'.

I have managed to use my car 4 times since the street disappeared under snow on 17th December. Every car in the road can get out every day - except the 2 BMW rear-wheel drive automatics. One is my old 5 series touring, which I swapped from 18inch runflats to 16 inch standard tyres some years back. This can get out most days - and a few quid for rear winter tyres (easily available for 16inch non-runflat) has made it a dawdle.
But mine on 255/35R18 runflats has not managed more than 30 yards :-( So next plan is to hire a Fiat Panda front wheel drive. Any better ideas ? Can you get runflat winter tyres to fit such wide wheels or is it a waste of time. Also checking out a swap onto 16inch or 17inch narrower wheels, but that will be costly. But currently car is just useless meal, whereas every other vehicle in the area (other than RWD BMW and Mercs) are laughing

The problem is the tires are too wide. Narrow tires are better in the snow. The best solution is putting the winter tires on separate rims. Get 225/50-17 tires on 17x8 rims. It takes no more space to store the tires on the rims.

Well, If we insist on using 3 year old threads...
I switch tyres in the winter for the same reason - my car will be going nowhere as my slight incline out of my drive is too much!
I also bought Ebay 17 inch wheels and fitted M+S runflats.
I must say the difference is huge. And the arguement that it prolongs your summer tyres is spot on.

And now I hear on Sky that we (UK) are due for more severe snow Tuesday evening/Wednesday.. I thought we'd seen the back of that. I've only just washed the car having seen the snow disappear in the last few days! Sighhhh

I believe there are winter tyres and there are snow tyres. Part of the winter tyre technology is a response to an allegation that at an air temperature of 7C, the compound characteristics of standard tyres undergo a change reducing grip and braking distances.
In the UK, over an average winter we have many days under 7C.
Except it didn't happen this year - hence the title of my post...
Next year?? Not if the scientists are right!
Maybe Blizzak and Vredstein are going to have to develop "Jungle Tyres".

I have been searching for some answers to the same questions
the last few weeks without any luck .
It would appear that on my car the only option is
to keep a seperate set of wheels and tyres for winter.
Pirreli and Vredestein have some sizes close but not exact ?
