You either have to be insane or have money to burn to buy Winter tyres for the UK.
It rarely if ever snows here...

In the UK, over an average winter we have many days under 7C.
Except it didn't happen this year - hence the title of my post...
Next year?? Not if the scientists are right!
Maybe Blizzak and Vredstein are going to have to develop "Jungle Tyres".

It rarely if ever snows here and when it does its a light sprinkling. The roads get gritted and everything is a-ok. The only place I could see use would be in Scotland.
PS2 are good in both summer and winter so why buy different tyres for approximately 2 weeks of 'cold'.

Michelin state thaat at temperatures below 7c, the Pilot Alpin stops 6 meters faster than 'normal' tyres.

If you pick up a cheap set of rims the cost of winter tyres is negligable, whilst they are on the car, the summer tyres are not being worn out.
Over a 4 year period I will either wear out 2 sets of summers or one set of summer and one set of winter. Cost is roughly the same.

Why not just stick with winters? (Literally).
Oh... and how cheap is "cheap" for a second set of wheels?

I believe there are winter tyres and there are snow tyres. Part of the winter tyre technology is a response to an allegation that at an air temperature of 7C, the compound characteristics of standard tyres undergo a change reducing grip and braking distances.
In the UK, over an average winter we have many days under 7C.
Except it didn't happen this year - hence the title of my post...

As for this year, I sometimes wish I had left my 19" PS2s on the car, because its been so mild. That said, had I left them on it probably would have snowed!

Hmmm... so winters and summers wear the same? And no difference in ride or economy?

I winter tyres lose performance as temp rise above 7c in the same way summers lose out as temps drop.
Winter tyres at 25c would perform very badly compared to summers.
Average temps for southern UK in December, Jan and Feb range between 5c and 8c. This year as you have pointed out they have been way above that and frankly my winter tyres have been of no great beneft. In a normal year (if there is such a thing) I would expect to have the benefit if better braking most of the time for those three months.
It is marginal though. If it was not for the coming ski trip I probably would not have bothered. Up North though, different issue.
I picked up a set of 8J x 17 OEM rims on ebay for ?180, took the tyres off and sold them for ?70, so I got a set of rims for ?110.

I guess the ?70 covered the costs for balancing, valves, fitting or do you provide your own "one stop shop"?

That is all part of the overall tyre cost over the period.
4 years 2 sets of tyres 2 sets of valve and balance, summer or winter.

What intrigues me is how you manage to eke out one set of summers for 36 months (assuming 4 sets of 3months on the winters)... (of course you may be sensible and buying a car with brand new tyres and selling the car with totally bald tyres!!)...

My wife thinks it is because all the hot air I spout makes the car lighter.
