I'm getting at least 35, but that includes some motorway driving (the M25 carpark though).

Unless you are driving it hard it doesn't sound right for a 525d.

Doesn't appear right. I average 24mpg in my 520 petrol and this is mainly short town trips.

Is it manual or auto ?

No worries!
It will improve . Might take 6000 miles befor eit really runs free.
See thread from ISUK and others a few months ago - they were getting 33 in town from 530d's . ( 39 on a run with plenty of enthusiasm!)

My 530d drinks around 8 liters of diesel in 100 kms.
If i use BP ULTIMATE diesel it can decrease to 7,7 l / 100 km.
If i really speed it can reaches the 9,5 l / 100 km.
