Hi, guys im John from Middlesbrough. Not an E60 owner yet but a potential one.

Im sorry to keep harping on about it, but onan 05 525d how worried should I be about 'swirl flaps' and how many of you diesel owners have took them out. Ive already suffered from Nikasil problem on my E39 I dont want another engine being messed up. I want a BMW I can enjoy!

Save your money and gun for a 530d or 535d IMHO, the economy is better in some situations and the performance not even comparable, price differences negligable......

All IMHO of course

The updated 530d engines from mid 2005 seem so far to be ok from what I have seen on the forums, however I know Dave ? heard of an 05 plate 530d which self destructed with the revised SF's , hope thats a one off or something

Not sure on the 525d's, not something I know much about.

That was taken after a lot of polishing, I did machine polish it a few weeks after and it looked even better but was almost dark by the time I finished so pics were out of the question.

How about this. I do try my best to keep it clean. UK weather tries its best to mess it up.

I agree with what you say, save for the 5530d or 535d. far better than the 525d. The 535d has same engine size but much less power. Price wise its not far off either (used).

cheers

Taking my car in to do get the rear bootlid spoiler sorted on Thursday. I've decided to get them to do an oil service while its in. Car has done 6900 miles but why keep the oil till its a year old. I have always used Mobil1 for all my previous petrol cars and felt, I should continue to use my favourite oil for this diesel engine.

Will go for Mobil1 ESP (longlife 4). Halfords sell them in 1ltr bottles about ?15ea. Thats roughly ?60 for 4ltrs at Halfords.
Did some searching and calling and found a local wholesale dealer. Minimum sale is 4x4ltr which roughly works out to ?35 per 4ltr pack.

I figure this is a bargain cause car's blood transfusion is about 7.7ltrs (so I am told), which means 2 x 4ltr packs used. And in another 6 months when the actual oil service comes about, I can use the remainder two packs.

Dealer is charging approx ?49(labour + filter + VAT all in). That works out to ?120 for an oil service. pretty good value seeing I used to pay close to ?200 for my previous car, a Volvo V50 T5. Talk about running cost nirvana. I am glad I junk'd the volvo back into BMWs.

BTW, anyone here have any shock-horror stories on using the Mobil1 ESP for my 535d instead of the Castrol the BMW dealers use?

it does not have to be on the bumper, the law states it has to be on the nearest (near verticle) part of the car towards the front, so that (for 90% of cars) is the bumper.
my defender is legal and has the plate mounted on the air vent above the bonnet.
Attachment 72566

it would depend on your bumper shape etc.
dont forget its NOT a legal requirement to have a front number plate...its a grey area because motorcycles dont have front number plates and a case was won in the courts siting discrimination (cars/bikes) and forward facing gatso cameras...
Hi all.

This is a crappy picture of my toy. That passed the MOT just fine. In fact, the front plate is the only part of it that I sometimes keep clear of mud!
