On Saturday I took delivery of my second E60, the first being in October 03 and was a 530D SE, and the new a 530D M Sport.

Here are my observations after a few days of driving for those who were early adopter like me.

Engine
I am running it in so no performance feedback yet, but it is noticeably quieter. And funnily enough much quieter when you switch it off. Old one seemd to chirp to a halt. The old 218hp engine seemed to bog down at very low revs, like when dropping to second at low speed to roll onto a roundabout. The new one seems to have more torque at idle speeds. (I am not a lover of autos and both cars are manual)

Steering
I read somewhere that its all Servotronic now, and it is a lot lighter a slow speeds. The car seems smaller on the road as a result. It is also missing the clonk the old one had at parking speeds (there from new).

Fit and finish.
These are much better, it feels like it was built by a different company. The match between the windscreen edge of the bonnet and front wings used to depress me, but its perfect on this one. Even the seat motors seem quieter. It just has the feeling of being screwed together a lot better.

Gearbox
This is lovely compared to the old one. The old one was heavy and notchy from new, and although it got better it was always a disapointment when compared to 3 series I have had in the past.

M Sport Pack
I don't mean to offend anyone here, but the SE always felt a bit unspecial in it's looks. I had type 124 wheels, and they helped. However I now love the look of the car with the M sport pack, and at long last I find the finish and colour of the 172's enhance the car into something special. Love the steering wheel. Like just looking at the car, which I never did with the old one.

Ride
The old car had sports suspension, 18in rims and non-runflats. The new car 19in M Sport suspension and non runflats. There is little or no difference in ride quality although I haven't been on any great B roads yet.
Not sure about the Continentals, they seem a bit less grippy than the PS2's on the old car. I will have to wait and see what its like as the run-in period is over.

New Toys
HUD
The HUD is very good, although having figured out how it works, I think its quite expensive.
MP3
Seems to work very nicely, although you seem to need Nero Burning Rom to do it justice. MP3's don't work in the Changer still.
Bluetooth
I didn't have NAV on the last car as it wasn't available, but had bluetooth. The new car recognises any phone entry by voice input, wheras the old needed you to record the voice entries.
SatNav
I have a TomTom Go 700, but decided I was sick of wires hanging over the dashboard, and the ability to add speedcams to the BMW solution swung the Pro Nav Option. I am now a bit depressed that my car doesnt seem to have Postcodes, and the dealer is looking into it. The rest of the system seems good though.
Extended Voice
Hmmm, takes time to learn what to say, but its getting better. Seem to be saying Options all the while.
Logic 7
Unchanged
TV-Tuner
Oh dear, haven't seen a good picture yet, other than outside the dealers.

In all I am very happy with the new car, it just feels so much more special than the old one. The change in steering, gearbox, engine, looks and quality have settled my fears that it would just feel like the same car again.

Will post pics once I have them resized.

ok here are some pics. the first pic is the New next to the old.

The other issue that is much better on the new is that the paint has less orange peel effect, or is this due to the Supagard treatment

Great looking car. Love the rims also.. I also doubt about getting the 172s or the ones i now have (135s).

I felt the 231 was a lot quieter than the 218, and smoother and quicker. Was pleasantly suprised with trim and fit coming from an Audi. Best thing I ever did (apart from marriage & kids of course )

Veeeeery nice . Good choice (imo) and lots of goodies as well. Did not like the 172's in the beginning, but the more I see them, the more I like them.
I agree with you that the M Sport package makes a big difference. More and more E60's can be seen in the streets here now, and a lot of them have the sport package.

Have had mine for a year now, and can also keep looking at it, esp. after a good wash.
Enjoy!!!
