so as i just got on the nj turnpike on my commute home from work in nyc... *BANG!!*... feels like someone just rear ended my car ('06 e60 530i).. and again!.. i look around and theres no one behind or around me and then with my foot still on the gas pedal (auto/step) the engine seems to drop down a couple of gears and loose it's steam, two seconds after my dash board and idrive screen light up (w/ the images above).

transmission malfunction.

o great. i pull over as the engine "kick" or whatever is happening that jolts the car makes it feel like someone is bumping the rear of my car occurs a couple more times. turn the engine off, let it sit for a few and opened the hood.. things look fine, no smoke or anything, looked under the car and no leaks either. i start up the engine and proceed to merge into traffic and again. *BAM!!*

well.. i end up making it home and am posting this to see if this has happened to anyone before as well (no i havent searched yet, i just got home and am looking for my salesman/"advisors" business card to see what time the service dept opens tomorrow as i'll be dropping it off as i dont feel safe driving 55 miles each way to and from work).

so lemme know if this has happened before, or if you have any ideas as to what happened. (bringing my car in for service for this is covered under standard warranty right? im not over the 4yr/50000mi limit yet).

thanks.

I had the increased Emissions one before for a like 2-3 days and then it went away and never came back. Never seen the other ones and I SURE DO NOT EVER want to see it.

Good luck hope you get some good responses...

your car is a 2006 530 Steptronic?

Nice.

well hope you get it sorted out. This one seems a little worse than all the other transmission problems I've read here before. Hope its nothing too serious...

Keep us updated.

Just had the same thing (Transmission malfunction) appear on my '06 530i which I also picked up in Sept. Fortunately, I was only 5 minutes from home. I was stopped at a light and when I accelerated got the message and Check Engine light came on. No real bang or anything. Pulled off, turned off the car, started it again and began accelerating. In about a minute, it happened again and I limped it home.

Called dealer and am having it towed on Monday to have them look at it. They were able to get me an X3 loaner for the weekend, though I have to pay $5 a day for it. (On a separate note, though that's not a lot of money, it kind of grated on me from a principle POV. 5 month old car is malfunctioning and I still have to pay for a loaner???)

I'm hoping it's just a sensor or computer glitch. Car was driving great right up to it happening.

A work pal of mine had this week a gearbox problem in this E46, 318iA.

He got his car to the dealers on auto-emergency gear 3, but the problem
was found out to be only a sensor one, actually two sensors.

But if you heard a "bang", your problem is bad -> to the dealers!

exactly, this was not a software problem! i got a call back from my service advisor mid week, saying my transmission was hosed. they replaced it (and all 4 tires too... some kind of cupping/defect) with a new one. they werent sure why or what led to this problem. anyhow, great service from bmw/dealer, also had a loaner for the 4 days it was in the shop, an x3 w/ 700 miles.

im glad that it's back
