ughhh, only 4000 miles on my 2006 525 and the car died this morning. started up this morning and all seemed fine. drove 2 blocks to the grocery store and when i came back the car wouldnt start. DEFINITELY seemed like a dead battery.

called BMW and a truck came in 45 minutes. tried to boost me but nothing happened.
called BMW again....waited another 45 minutes and had the car towed to the dealer.

any ideas what it can be?????

now its the weekend and i have no car...have to wait for the dealer to reopen on monday

Very strange. Having gone through a bad cell experience last week, I can say that running it doesn't do any good, but it was not Sudden Death Syndrome either. I had a hard time starting mine: barely caught, lost all settings, throwing all kinds of (low voltage-related) codes.

This is very odd, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that it is something mechanical or electro-switch, as opposed to battery. Did you look at the telltale porthole on top of the batttery? Should glow green.

Good luck,
Ray Hull

I would not be surprised if it is the battery. Today's batteries, including those on the BMW, are known for dying completely without any warning.

Similar thing happened to me to however it was first thing in the morning, had driven the car previous evening and all was fine. If nothing is happening when you turn the key, no cranking etc.. , could be a loose connection to the starter, which is what happened to me.
Let us know

P.S. if nothing shows up on service dept computer, then I am sure that it is same problem as mine. I watched service guy get to problem from bottom of car while on lift, they had to remove panel underneathe the car. I was on my way after about 1.5 hours from the time I got droped off by the tow truck

I've had a problem with my E46 where while I was driving, the dash board suddenly die on me and everything stuck at the last position I was in (120km and 3000 rpm). So I stop the car and shut off the car hoping to restart it but then the car wouldn't start. Called BMW and while waiting for the tow truck, went to the fuse panel and disconnected the fuse for the dashboard to see if it is a blown fuse, but nothing wrong. Put the fuse back and the dashboard goes back to normal mode and the car started. Don't have a clue what was that all about but work out fine in the end.

Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL

Ok, seriously, very sorry to hear. But can't believe the dealer would not give you a loaner car (or even a comp'ed rental from Hertz or somebody)? Even if the service dept is closed the dealership ought to be able to hook you up with a ride for the weekend.

Good luck with it.

I had a similar but slightly different problem with mine when my car stalled on a steep hill and caused a traffic jam. Police came and brought a tow truck. It would crank over, but the car ended up with some sensor dying and it wouldn't even let gas into the engine. So it seemed like the car was empty, but was 3/4 full of fuel.

Now it's fine again, and no more problems.

got he car back last night.....

dealer said i had a bad battery and they replaced it. they also checked the alternator and other ignition components and said all looked ok. so as 'gray dog' said, i guess these batteries can die without any notice.

on a much brighter note; they updated me to 19.01 (?) free of charge and its much better!!!! shifts are silky smooth now.
