I use my left foot for braking about 80% of the times I drive.
You won't see my brakelights, unless I'm pushing the brake pedal.
Using the left foot is not dangerous at all, it is a very good technique, but you have to learn it.
BTW, every pro does it.

It's just a bit risky if you're not trained... that might be the reason you have been told to not use the left foot.
If it was wrong, why are the pros doing it then?
If you're trained it is the best way of driving.
Faster reaction times, and usually you brake harder in an emergency.

I don't think that, if done properly, the "heel-toe" technique that you're referring to requires the left foot on the brake. The way I was taught to heel-toe is to use the right foot on both the gas and the brake while the left foot does the clutching. The way you describe it to work seems very counter-intuitive and also seems quite a bit more difficult to execute.

ever since i got behind the wheel on automatics i have always used my left foot to break. Probabaly because my Dad drives like that also.
but when i was training for manual transmission I had to get used to brake with the right....it eventually became 2nd nature
i actually feel more safer breaking with my left it gives ME quicker response time to brake. but i dont keep my left foot resting in the brake DUH!
