It is not a tire pressure monitor system.

Correct - I should not have referred to it as such.

It indirectly detects pressure loss by measuring a higher wheel speed at the wheel which has the puncture.

My wife's Renault has the pressure sensors on each wheel. But I wonder if this just introduces more risk (when getting tyres changed/replaced), or potential points of failure.

Does the BMW system not use info from the existing ABS system/sensors?
BMW used to have the system that measure the actual pressure in the wheels. But they caused problems. Tyre places broke them and guys changing wheels got constant errors.

You are correct, the ABS wheel speed sensors are used to detect the flat

Where is this info from ?

It sounds strange, since they have just switched all models to the non-pressure system

If I remember correctly it was posted on some bulletin that listed all the new stuff for MY06. I tried searching for it but wasnt able to come across the thread again but I did come across Rudy's post a very reliable source here and he said it too...

No, it does not tell you which tyre it thinks has a problem. Which is nasty.

Mine has gone off three times in 10 days. The first time was a real puncture (on the day I picked the car up - dealer fitted a new tyre to replace). The second time it went off I took it to a tyre place, they said one tyre was 2lb down, but found no puncture (but did not take the tyre of the rim, just did an external inspection). I reset the monitor and its gone off again five days later. Checked all four tyre pressures, they're OK - to within a couple of pounds of each other in pairs. Reset monitor again. If this carries on I shall get a bit grumpy! Anyone else with over-keen TPM?
