Newbie here and I am just starting to "fix" my 2005 E60 Orient Blue:
I'm looking for some new shoes for the but was hoping that someone could help with a few questions?
1. what is the difference between the M5 and M6 offset? M6 seems to have a more aggressive offset and fit the wheel better?
2. do both the 166 and 172 style rims come both offsets?
3. what tire size is suggested for these rims. I see a lot of people are running a 245/35/19 in the front and a 275/30/19 in the rear? Is it possible to fit a 275/35/19 in the rear or is that too much sidewall?

Re #3 ... I would run the bigger tire size on the rears.
I had the 166s with 275/30/19 for 3 summers on my old 2006 550i and I always thought that size rubber looked too small for the wheel (and wheel well). But after wearing out those tires, this Spring I put on 275/35 and they looked excellent - with a profile that better matches the fronts, and they looked better on the wheel and filled in the well.

My Ride: Volvo V70 D5 Summum
Resently owned a
530D -05 Orentic Blue
Sport Seats and Sport steering wheel.
Hello
I have just for a month ago baught 166 with M5 offset not M6 offset to my 530D
It also Orentic blue.
I have no sport suspension and I used 245/40-19 front and 275/35-19 rear.
When I turn full the front tires rubbing the plastic inner fenders a little nothing you hear but can see as it scratching marks.
I liked the look I got with this.
One thing is that the roads at not so good here in Sweden and I have digged a little in the wheel adjustments.
I will try and get my rear settings as it is to M5, It is not so big toe-in and a little less camber.
I hope this will get the car not so sensitive, after running on the high way you can feel that the tire is more warm on the inside vs the outside.
I will tell after I have the settings changed
Best regards

Read more about the wheels offsets here.
And don't say you are so ignorant that you don't manage a bit German.

172's are BY FAR nicer than 166's. IMHO.
I'm very biased

1. what is the difference between the M5 and M6 offset? M6 seems to have a more aggressive offset and fit the wheel better?
166 M5 and M6 Offset in the Front is the same ET:12. The rear offsets are as follows: M5 ET:28, M6 ET:17. There is an 11mm difference between the M5 and M6 offset, pushing the latter further out/flush with the fender.
2. do both the 166 and 172 style rims come both offsets?
166 offsets have been discussed in the above answer. Offsets for 172's are: F ET:18, R ET:32. These are the only offsets offered for 172 wheels.

the recc'd tire size has been discussed by other members already (including you). Here is another thread regarding different tire sizes

I also think that 172s look much nicer than 166s. I like the 167s every bit as much as my 172s. The 167s are, of course, much easier to keep clean.
