I've spent the last 3 years gathering this data and so I thought I'd document some of my findings here.

Tyco / AMP manufacture all the plugs and sockets for the BMW but most of them are for BMW only and can only be bought from BMW and nowhere else. However the pins and contacts used inside these plugs and connectors are not only used for BMW but for other Tyco parts as well. Biggest problem is Tyco will not tell you what pins are used in the BMW parts and BMW will not tell you the Tyco part numbers for these items.

So far I have been buying the pin and socket contacts from BMW directly and never liked it because they were too expensive (?1 each) and they came pre-crimped with a foot long piece of wire which was absolutely no use and then required me to solder another wire to the back of the wire.

All the sockets and plugs you see here http://bmwfans.info/original/E60/Lim/520d-...61/ill-61_1280/ are made for BMW specially however the most important thing to note is that they are part of the Tyco "Micro Quadlok Interconnection System". Once you know that its easy to get the Tyco part numbers for the contact and then source them elsewhere from places like Farnells and RS (less than ?0.05 each).

See attached for all the Tyco part numbers. 1307999_Micro_Quadlok.pdf

e.g.

BMW also use other contacts in our cars which for some reason are not listed in the ETK under the E60 but you can find them under the E39 or the E90 sections. The ones I've come across that are not listed are the

I made some custom cables including the MQS pins (both male/female).

They can be ordered from BMW without cable and sold per 10 pieces (on a rail). See picture where such a rail is shown: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Quadlock-Plug-Most-Chamber-A-AUX-Line-IN-OUT-Amplifier-Telephone-CD-Plus-Pins-/111199119039.
